Long-running Open Source Solutions Company Turns 15.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
3rd of May, 2006.
One of the world's oldest open source companies, Cybersource, reached a
milestone this week - 15 years in business. In that time, Cybersource
has established an international reputation for technology expertise and
vision, as the two founding technologies which it focused its business
on, the TCP/IP-based Internet and open source software, become ascendant
or dominant globally.
"In an industry with an often volatile nature, Cybersource feels proud
to announce that we have been in successful, profitable and continuous
operation for over 15 years," said Cybersource founder and CEO Con
Zymaris. "When we began the firm, way back in May of 1991, the Internet
was unknown to most in business and what would eventually become known
as open source software was invisible to all but a privileged few in
research and in the geek space."
"We wanted to apply our energies not only to build and grow a new
business, but also ensure that the ICT industry, and eventually the
broader community, were made aware of both these technologies. We
consider them to be truly epoch-making. In time, the Internet displaced
all other, often proprietary networks, affording users and IT managers
universal access and interoperability. Open source software, such as
Linux, is enacting similar changes to the software space, bringing high
quality, high value software to both industry and the community, along
with digital freedoms for all," added Cybersource co-founder and CTO,
David Keegel.
Among other Australian firsts, Cybersource was the first business to
offer Internet-related technical services, the first business to offer
commercial open source support services, the first to run a Linux
business event, the first to offer Linux training, the first to found an
open source industry cluster (Open Source Victoria, subsequently funded
by the Victorian Government) and was also instigator and co-founder of
the national Open Source Industry Australia, Limited.
"As a boutique specialist, which eschewed the easy path of merely
reselling foreign-made technology, we've carved out a growing niche for
our products and services. We chose not to rely on a big-buddy vendor
nor have we accepted external venture funding, believing that both could
damage the culture we've established in our business," continued
Zymaris. "This has resulted in business freedom and afforded us a
platform from which to pursue innovative services and solutions."
Cybersource has also built a range of often unique technology products,
all based upon open source software technologies, such as the Small
Business Linux Server, Datasafe, TrimClient, LiveLAMP, AllocPSA, Safe
Internet Computer and the Server Replicator.
"We've been both lucky and privileged to work with many great customers
and industry colleagues over the past 15 years. The open source space in
particular is a most exciting place to be right now. We're here to ride
this new wave of growth and aim to be here in another 15 years' time,"
concluded Zymaris.
