ONLINE BANKING COASTGUARD: YOUR PROTECTION AGAINST ILLEGAL PHISHING
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Australia -- 21st March, 2005
Banks worldwide have a problem - phishing attacks, keyloggers, malware,
security and privacy-holes have left their customers wary of doing their
banking on the Internet. And online banking was supposed to be the way
of the future for the world's financial institutions. How is it possible
to keep both banks and their customers happy and their accounts secure?
Introducing the Online Banking Coastguard - the safest platform for
online banking.
"We know there's concern amongst online banking users at present," said
Rohan Tronson, Coastguard product manager at Cybersource. "Which is why
we created the technology behind Coastguard. Banks are looking for a
cost-effective solution to offer best-practice security to their users,
thus encouraging greater usage of online banking. Coastguard is that
best-practice solution."
Online banking customers are at risk from the following attacks:
1) key-loggers, which can be installed via spyware or viruses, even on
on supposedly secured operating systems such as Windows XP SP2. These
can capture and redirect passwords to 3rd-parties, undetected.
2) phishing attacks, which can redirect even experienced users to fake
banking sites and allow them to harvest passwords.
3) DNS and caching-DNS hijacking, which can temporarily make the
web-address used by phishers appear to bank customers as the actual
web address owned by the bank.
"What is interesting about all of the main attacks against banks and
banking customers is that they are not solved by alternative security
measures, such as tokens which generate cryptographic PINs etc,"
continued Tronson. "Cybersource's Online Banking Coastguard solution
offers banking customers software technology which prevents all these
major attacks. It achieves this by running a totally locked-down, secure
operating system and applications from non-modifiable media, with
DNS-lookup configurations hardwired to secured servers run by the banks
themselves."
Bank customers can run Cybersource's Online Banking Coastguard solution
from their standard PCs at home, from public libraries or from Internet
cafes. The software runs from the CD and does not need to be installed
or un-installed. Cybersource provides all the customisation and
rebranding services that the banks would need and offers annual second
and third-level technology support for both the banks and their
customers.
